He went on to school at Bakersfield Junior College and played in two Jr. Rose Bowl games for the Renegades. He joined the U.S. Navy and reached the rank of Third Class Petty Officer, Radar man. After the Navy, he went back to school, attending Fresno State College, receiving his teaching credentials. His first teaching job was at Rosedale Elementary School, then Buttonwillow Elementary School. He moved to Fresno and taught in Fresno Elementary and went back to Fresno State College, receiving his upper teaching credentials. He took a job at Riverdale, CA and taught plus coached the Jr. Varsity football. Later, he became the Assistant Varsity Coach, and a couple years later took over as the Varsity Coach, where he taught until his retirement in 2000. He drove trucks after his school retirement, until his death. He married his wife of 46 years, Lois Rutledge of rural Lamont, who was at his side at the time of his passing, as were all of his children. Daughters: Rebecca, Lori, Julie and their spouses, and son, John and his wife and two granddaughters. His brother, Billie Ray of Bakersfield and wife, Ginger and, brother-in-law, Bob Rutledge of Bakersfield and other family members. John was the eleventh child of Charlie Alexander Atchley and Lillie Rebecca (Bryan) Atchley who lived in Arvin until their passing in the late fifties and early sixties. He has one other brother living, Bennie Joe of Glasgow, Montana with his wife, Shirley; two sisters, Mary Alice Durham of Bakersfield and Lillie Belle (Cain) Hines of Lamont. The services will be held at the Methodist Church in Riverdale, CA, 1:00 p.m., Saturday, December 4th. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to Arvin High School Alumni Club, or Valley Children Hospital, Fresno, in Johns name.
