Edward Harris Services: Thurs., Dec. 9, 6:30 p.m. Fr. Ed Harris was born on May 10, 1911, in Denver, Colorado. He was the oldest of three with two brothers, Walter and John, who preceded him in death. Walter was also a priest and John was a lawyer. Fr. Harris spent his grade school career at St. Francis de Sales in Denver. At the time the staff consisted of four priests, and they had a tremendous influence on him. The Pastor there loved athletics and that rubbed off on Fr. Ed. He went to Regis High School in Denver with a scholarship for both football and baseball. He moved on to Regis College with a scholarship from the Post Newspaper. In 1931, at the age of 21, Edward Harris joined the Jesuit order. It was the summer of his third year in college. He moved to Florissant, Missouri where he studied at the St. Louis Seminary. He spent four years there until he moved on to study Philosophy at St. Louis University, and was there for three years. After learning all he could about Philosophy, he went on to teach at Marquette High School. He taught English, Theology, Speech and Latin for three years. He then went on to teach Theology at St. Marys in Kansas, and then back to St. Louis University where he received his Masters in Greek and Bases of Modern Culture. He decided to stay in St. Louis and teach high school. Fr. Harris came to Bakersfield in 1977 where he became a priest in residence at St. Francis Church. He remained here until 2000 when ill health forced him to return to his Order in St. Louis. Fr. Harris endeared himself to the people of St. Francis Parish with his dedication to God and love of the priesthood. The Pastoral Center of St. Francis Church is named for Fr. Harris. He loved the friends he made in Bakersfield and life in St. Francis Parish. A memorial Mass will be held on December 9, 2004, at 6:30 p.m., at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 900 H Street. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the St. Francis Parish Scholarship Fund, c/o St. Francis Parish Church, 900 H Street, Bakersfield, CA 93304.
