Elsie was born on February 7, 1926 in Bakersfield, California. Except for a brief time when she resided in New Orleans, LA, she resided in Bakersfield her entire life. She attended Kern Union H.S. (now BHS). While working for Dr. Howard Grove, she realized her love of OBGYN nursing and pediatric medicine. She obtained an R.N. degree in the first nursing program offered at Bakersfield College. For the next 33 years she worked as a Pediatric and Post Partum Nurse at Memorial Hospital. Elsie was fondly recognized as the nurse that took such good care of me throughout her life. Nursing was one of the great loves of her life and she took great pride in her nursing accomplishments. She loved her children and her grandchildren, traveling, trips to Hawaii, swimming and snorkeling, and her pets. Things that brought Elsie joy included her 1950 Dodge Coronet in which many memorable trips were made to Pismo Beach and Cambria Pines, her favorite. Elsie was known for her cheesecakes. She NEVER said no to ice cream, especially Dewars. Her favorite pastime was shopping at Brocks Dept. Store. Many employees, including Mr. Brock, knew her by name. Elsies family jokingly teased her about needing therapy when Brocks closed. Later she replaced that love with Gottschalks. Elsie was married for 48 years to John J. Fortenberry, who preceded her in death in 2001. She is survived by her sister, Bernice Stormont; son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Eric and Louise Fortenberry of Bakersfield; daughters and sons-in-law, Elise and Rodney Mitchell, of Phoenix, Laurie and Jerry Nicholson of Los Angeles, Wendy and Jim Hendricks of Bakersfield; and grandchildren, Joshua White, Rodney Jr. and Cheyenne Mitchell, Austin, Fred and Elizabeth Nicholson, Nicole, Kyra and Michael Hendricks, David, Jessica and Jacob Fortenberry, and many extended family members and dear friends. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you! to the many people that helped care for Elsie during the past three years, especially Rita Stokes and Jeweleen Holliwell. Donations may be made to Elsies name to St. Pauls Episcopal Church. Visitation will be held Wednesday 5:00-9:00 p.m. and Thursday 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. at Greenlawn Mortuary.
