Chenoweth on December 7, 2004. Stuarts passion for theater and his love and exuberance for teaching touched many throughout his life. Stuart was born November 9, 1917, in Bakersfield, California to Lawrence and Sibyl Chenoweth. He was the third of three children, preceded by Dorothy Chenoweth Klausner and Lawrence Everett Chenoweth II. Stuart obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science and a Master of Arts in Foreign Trade at the University of California, Berkeley, where he was a resident of International House. Stuart later continued his studies at the University of Denver, where he obtained a Master of Arts in Theater and at Northwestern University, where he obtained his PhD. Stuart served as a B-17 bombardier in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, completing 25 missions over Europe. He was presented with the Distinguished Flying Cross in 1943 for extraordinary achievement and heroism. Dr. Chenoweth taught theater at Michigan State University from 1947-1960. He returned to California in 1961 to continue his distinguished teaching career at San Francisco State University as an Assistant Professor and later Director of Dramatics in the Department of Speech. Stuart retired from San Francisco State University as Emeritus Professor, Theater Arts Department, in 1985. Stuart had a lifelong interest in his familys history and explored both the Curran and Chenoweth roots through extensive research and international travel, including visits to the familys original home in Cornwall, England. His wonderful hillside garden and warm hospitality awaited visitors. Stuart could engage ANYONE in a personal conversation, regardless of the size of the occasion or a persons age, and to tickle everyone with his outrageous humor and his theatrics. Stuart is survived by his two nieces, Dr. Deborah Osen Hancock of Fullerton, CA and Dr. Mary Ann Klausner of Eugene, OR; his two nephews, Robert Klausner and his wife, Kathy of Williamsburg, VA and Karl Klausner and his wife, Maureen of Castro Valley, CA; and eight grandnieces and grandnephews. A family celebration of his life will be held on January 8, 2005, in Bakersfield, California. Remembrances of Stuart may be made in the form of a donation in Stuarts honor to the Dorothy Chenoweth Klausner Reading Fund, Cal State Fullerton, 2600 E. Nutwood Ave., Fullerton, CA 92831.
