Magnus Services: Mon., Dec. 20, 1:30 p.m. Melvin W. Magnus was born April 28, 1911, in Toledo, Ohio. He moved with his family to Los Angeles at the age of 11. Melvin graduated from Hollywood High in 1930. He worked at Universal Studios for three years. He and his brother, Russ, began Wilshire Table Tennis (ping-pong). Mel then went to law school, passing the bar in 1940. He married Hulda, his sweet-heart of five years, in 1941. From 1942 to 1945, Melvin worked in the shipyards in Sausalito. In 1945, Melvin and Hulda moved their young family to Bakersfield. He was a Deputy District Attorney in 1947, and set up the Failure to Provide division, which became model for the state program. From 1947 to 1962 Mel taught Real Estate Law. He was in private practice from 1954 to 1999, where he helped so many people. In 1947 Mel was a charter member of Temple Beth El where he was later president. He sang there in the choir for 40 years and taught religious school. He was the president of the Bakersfield Community Theater. Mel was on the board of the Alzheimers Asociation and on the board of the Bakersfield City Schools. He was a member of the Blue Lodge, the Scottish Rite and was a Shriner. Melvin was on the Democratic Central Committee. He taught until recently at Kern Literacy. Melvin was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, who will always be remembered for his warmth. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Hulda Magnus; his son, Steven and wife, Gail Magnus; daughter, Margaret and husband, Myron Medearis; and his four wonderful grandchildren, Elliott and Blake Elizabeth Magnus; and Eliza and Dara Medearis. Services will be held Monday, December 20, 2004, at 1:30 p.m., in the Chapel of Greenlawn Mortuary, 3700 River Blvd. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in memory of Melvin be made to the Temple Beth El Religious School Building or your favorite charity.
