She passed away December 27th at the age of 82, after a brief illness. One of Frans earlier recollections was witnessing a tornado near Rockford, Illinois at age 6. At age 7, she and her family moved from Illinois to California, settling first in Kingston Valley. Around age 12, the family moved to the Barstow area, where she graduated high school. Here, at age 19, she met and married her first husband, Justin Demitry. They lived in a small cottage on his familys ranch. She often spoke of the fun she had while occasionally driving the alfalfa tractor. Justin passed away suddenly only a few years later. In 1951, she married her life partner, Russell, a conductor-brakeman for the Santa Fe Railroad. In 1952 they moved to Bakersfield with their new baby daughter. They arrived just in time to experience the BIG Kern County Quake of 52. Fran had several interesting jobs over the years, including running the post office inside the General Store in Hinckley, CA; logging items in an auction house; and as a dietician at, what as then, Kern General Hospital (KMC). She enjoyed being a devoted wife and mother most of all, Active in the PTA, she never missed a school recital or program and this included the grandkids school or sporting events. Among the organizations Frances belonged were The Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen Ladies Auxiliary; National Association of Retired and Veteran Railroad Employees Unit 108; and UTU Needles Point Lodge #732. In her younger years, she enjoyed helping out on the election board. Over the years Fran was known as a great cook (her upside-down pineapple cake is legendary). She enjoyed being a skilled crossword puzzle solver, collecting Cabbage Patch Kids, being an avid weather watcher, and collecting favorite things such as owls and clocks. She also had a bit of a shoe obsession that was second only to the collection of Imelda Marcos. Music was something she loved, especially the Oakridge Boys, the Statler Brothers, Dolly Parton and her favorite, Tom Jones. Although she listened to all kinds of music, Country music was her favorite. Frances was a gentle, sweet, caring soul with a fun sense of humor, She was the first person her daughter would phone each morning and the last call made every night. She was a great companion to have along on any occasion or just to be with, and she loved rooting for her Los Angeles Dodgers. Fran will be greatly missed by all of her family and friends. Preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Irene Larson and sister, Phyllis Paul. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Russell Rutlin, daughter, Jeri Anne Ferree and son-in-law, Rob Ferree of Bakersfield; son, Terry Rutlin and daughter-in-law, Suzanne Rutlin of Arroyo Grande brother, Lowell Larson and sister-in-law, Arlene of Barstow; brother, Earl Bud Larson and sister-in-law Lourdes of Newberry Springs; grandchildren, Erin Ferree-Thro of Belmont, Robbie Ferree and Patrick Ferree of Bakersfield, Holly Machin of Petaluma, Eric Rutlin of Los Gatos and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. A special thanks to nephew, Chuck Albee; his wife, Debbie and daughter Desiree, whose many visits during her brief illness always brightened her day, lifted her spirit and gave her much comfort. Graveside services will be held at Hillcrest memorial Park, Monday January 3, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. Additional Comments: Volunteer submission - No relation to deceased.
