Services: Thurs., Jan. 6, 3 p.m. Chapel services will be held in Greenlawn Memorial Chapel, 3700 River Blvd., for John Wesley Lucas, 63, who passed away January 3, 2005. Jack was born on December 25, 1941, in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Albion College, Albion, Michigan (1964); the University of Detroit School of Dentistry, DDS Degree Detroit, Michigan (1968); and the Wayne State University School of Medicine, Oral Surgery Residency, Detroit, Michigan (1971- 1974). Jack was an active member in several professional societies, including the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, American Dental Association, Michigan State Dental Association, California Dental Association, Kern County Dental Association, the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and the Southern California Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons Peer Review Committee. He also attended the Pierre Fauchard Academy of Denistry, the International College of Dentists and was a Diplomat of the American Board of Oral Surgery. Throughout his career he had active staff privileges at the following Bakersfield hospitals: Mercy Hospital, Greater Bakersfield Memorial Hospital, and San Joaquin Hospital. Jack also proudly served his country as a Captain in the United States Air Force. Jack was a member of the American Cancer Society, serving on the Professional Education Committee and on the Professional Speakers Bureau. He received the Recipient of State Award for developing the program Dipping, Chewing, and Snuff All You Wanted to Know. When his children were younger, Jack was involved with the YMCA Indian Princess and Indian Guides, as well as the American Youth Soccer Association. He enjoyed spending time on the soccer fields with his kids both as a coach and as a referee. Jack was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, where he regularly attended Friday night steak dinners and played racquetball. Jack was a perfectionist in both his professional life as an oral surgeon and in his personal life, which involved numerous hobbies and projects. He was a licensed pilot who, with the help of his friends from the Bakersfield Airpark, built two experimental airplanes, including the RV-4 and the Harmon Rocket. He also built a custom hangar at the airpark and spent considerable time there with his many friends and family. Jack loved riding motorcycles and attending bike week in Daytona Beach, Florida. His motorcycle adventures included dirt bike excursions across the Mojave desert and long tours on street bikes throughout the mountains in Kern County, Idaho and North Carolina. After retirement, Jack traveled frequently. He cherished his five grandchildren and often traveled to Virginia and Colorado to spend time with them. He also enjoyed visiting New York City during the holidays and touring the museums and battlefields surrounding Washington, DC. Most recently, Jack spent his summers in northern Idaho where he enjoyed cool summer nights and nice days on the lake. In the last five years of his life, Jack was fortunate enough to share his adventures with a dear friend and companion, Cheryl Varner of Bakersfield. Jack and Cheryl were married in April 9, 2004. Cheryls love and support were uncompromising during Jacks courageous fight against cancer. Jack is survived by his loving wife, Cheryl Lucas; daughter and son-in-law of Lakewood, Colorado, Kelley and Kip Groel and their children, Ryan and Meagan; son and daughter-in-law of Alexandria, Virginia, Eric and Adrienne Lucas and their children, Andrew and Claire; daughter and son-in-law of Haymarket, Virginia, Ellen and Doug Dvorak and their son, Carter. He was preceded in death by his mother, Marie Morrison and his father, John D. Lucas.
