He attended local schools, graduating from East Bakers-field High School in 1952. Gene worked as a signalman for Southern Pacific Railroad for 40 years. During that time he was active in his union, holding offices at the local and regional level. He was a lifelong union supporter. His interests and hobbies included bowling, fishing, camping, and traveling to new places. He especially enjoyed spending time on the California and Oregon coasts and along the Sea of Cortez in Baja. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Verla; and children, Andrea Phillips MacDonald, Michael Phillips, and Lisa Phillips Line; grandchildren, Erin MacDonald Christian, Jacob Line, Cameron Line, and Eric Mayhew; great- grandchildren, Corinne Christian and Jasen Line; sisters, Anna Mae Toy and Carol Steck and brother, John Phillips. In keeping with Genes wishes, there will be no funeral services, although a memorial for him will be scheduled at a later date. Donations may be made in his memory to a favorite charity.
