Austin J. Hunter passed away on Monday, January 3, 2005 after battling with cancer. Austin was born September 19, 1927 in Shafter, CA to Austin and Tena Buller Hunter. He attended Kern Academy in Shafter through 8th grade. His family then moved to Crescent City, CA and Austin attended Laurelwood Academy in Oregon and Walla Walla College in Washington. He later took additional class work at Loma Linda University, UCLA, and received his Masters Degree at Fresno State. Austin worked for more than 40 years in the field of education, first as an elementary teacher in Ukiah, Hysperia, and Wasco; later as a school psychologist, working in the Kern County District Office, Richland School District, and retired from the Panama-Buena Vista School District. After retirement he did some part-time school psychology work for Lamont and Fruitvale School Districts. He was very dedicated to his profession and loved working with children. This extended to his church, where he served as Pathfinder Director, and also worked as leader in the Youth Sabbath school classes for many years. Austin was a strong believer in the importance of education and encouraged and assisted many young people to further their education, either by giving counsel or buying books or helping with tuition. He made a big difference in many lives. Austin is survived by his wife of 23 years, Alice; children, Peggy Poor and husband, Tom of Pensacola, FL and Henry Hunter and wife, Diane of Redlands, CA; stepchildren, Jeffrey Prowitt and wife, Diana of Washington, PA and Karen Harrison and husband, Brent of Bakersfield, CA; grandchildren, Ryan, Dustin, Jody, Colin, Dylan, Corbin, Carli, Ian, Sterling, Whitney, and Natalie; and great-granddaughter, Regan. He is preceded in death by two children, daughter, Janice and son, Doug. Austin went to sleep without pain and had the peace in his heart that he will be reunited with all family and friends when the Lord returns to take us home (I Th. 4:13-18).
