David Church, longtime resident of Bakersfield, passed away on January 3, at his home in Hart Flat near Keene, with his wife, Joann at his side, he was 66. Although diagnosed with pancreatic cancer over a year ago, he responded well to treatment and was able to enjoy his last year before taking a recent turn for the worse. David was born in Palo Alto and moved to Bakersfield as a teenager with his parents, Clifford Carl Church and Doris Hull Church and older brother, Dennis. After high school he joined the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Okinawa before returning to Bakersfield where he met his wife, Patricia and raised two sons, Michael and Brian. David was a longtime pilot and spent many adventurous summers flying his family around the country in a series of small planes. He also spent many years under sports cars, on motorcycles, in his darkroom, greenhouse or wood shop, and up the mast of his sailboat. His biggest hobby seemed to be collecting hobbies, and he passed on his eclectic automotive, mechanical and electrical passions to his sons. Davids last few years were some of his best retiring from Pacific Bell (AT&T) after 30 years, enjoying an extended honeymoon with Joann and building his dream house in the mountains above Bakersfield. He also enjoyed a great many hours on projects in his new shop with his good friend, Jim Leonard who was like a brother. David is survived by his wife, Joann Church; son, Michael, daughter-in-law, Nancy and granddaughter, Elisabeth of Bakersfield; son, Brian, daughter-in- law, Debbie; grandsons, Graydon and Hudson and granddaughter, Winslow of Del Mar, CA; and stepfamily, Wayne, Kyla, Alyssa, Justin and Jarrett Lee of Bakersfield. Services will be held at Hillcrest Memorial Park Chapel, 9101 Kern Canyon Road, Bakersfield on Saturday, January 8, at 10:00 a.m. Pastor Lanny Lloyd of Stine Road Baptist Church of Bakersfield, CA will officiate, followed by interment at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
