Pastor Will Winn will officiate at the service. Visitation will be held at Hopson-Anspach Family Mortuary on Thursday, July 1st , from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Gertrude was born in East Bakersfield on January 3, 1914 to Minnie and Frank Sparks. She lived in Bakersfield for most of her life. She attended primary and secondary schools and graduated from Kern County Union High School in 1931. She held a variety of office management positions during her professional career spanning four decades. In 1940, she married Mason H. Purtle and was married for 41 years, raising three children with him. Gertrude was very involved in charitable and civic work. She was active in the Order of the Eastern Star and loved her work there, serving as Worthy Matron of the Caledonia Chapter in 1995. She volunteered in many roles with First Christian Church, including as Chairman of the Deaconesses. She was president of both the North of the River Womans Club and the Womens Press Club of Bakersfield. She contributed her time regularly to the Kern County Braille Association. Gertrude is survived by two daughters, Joanne Mullins and Laurie Berryhill, both of Bakersfield; son, Jeffrey Purtle of Greenville, South Carolina; son-in- law, Dennis Mullins; daughter-in-law, Mary A. Purtle; three grandchildren and five great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
