"Slim" Masters March 3, 1924 January 5, 2005 Visitation begins Monday, January 10, 2005, from 4:00-8:00 p.m. and graveside services will be held Tuesday, January 11, 1:00 p.m., both at Hillcrest Memorial Park & Mortuary. As a young man Slim served honorably in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific Theater. After his discharge from the Army, Slim came back to Bakersfield, California and went to work for Chevron as a roustabout in the oilfields. He soon moved to a drilling rig where he enjoyed working for many years. He earned a promotion as a Production Foreman and retired from that position in 1986. Slim then worked as a consultant for a drilling tool company. Slim served the oil industry for 47 years, and was well respected for his friendly manner, knowledge and his can do attitude. After retirement Slim enjoyed visiting the Shriners Childrens Hospital as a clown with the Kern County Shrine Club, Clown unit. He was a longtime member of the Masons. He enjoyed traveling to the Bob Hope Golf Classic, playing golf, riding his quad with his grandson, Dean, and Breakfast Club with his fellow retirees and friends. Slim was a caring and loving Father and Grandfather and Friend. ODell was preceded in death by his parents, Ora and Mary Frances Masters and grandson, David B. Powell. He is survived by his companion Peggy Thompson; daughters, LaVada (Hewes) Herron and Dwayne, Mary Seward, Madene Cox and Bryan; son, Donald Powell and Vivian; special grandson, Dean Powell; 11 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Special thanks to his faithful friends, Leonard, Tom and George and to his caregiver and friend, Ruby. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shriners Childrens Hospital.
