Ava Kathrine Tilghman

Services will be held for Ava Tilghman at the Elberon Christian Church, 18376 
Highway 15, Woody, CA on Monday, January 10, 2005, at 10:00 a.m. Ava Kathrine 
Tilghman passed into the arms of the Lord, January 3, 2005. 

Ava was born the eighth child of Lansdon and Tina Hudson in Bridgeport, Texas, 
August 16, 1919. She moved to Fresno, CA, with her husband, Lewis Tilghman and 
her daughter, Betty, in 1952. Following the death of her beloved Lewis in 
1991, she came to Bakersfield to be near her daughter. Ava had many friends in 
the Niles East Mobile Home Park, where she lived before her bout with cancer. 
She and the ladies who dubbed themselves the Dizzy Dozen spent many happy 
times together. Ava often attended Elberon Christian Church in Woody with her 
daughter, but remained a member of the First Baptist Church in Bridgeport, TX.

Being with family and friends was Avas greatest pleasure. She had fifteen 
nieces and nephews who loved her dearly and always expected her to attend the 
yearly Hudson family reunion in Bridgeport, TX. She is the last survivor of 
her siblings. Ava is survived by her daughter, Betty L. Saunders and son-in-
law, E.W. (Bill) Saunders of Poso Flat near Glennville; stepson, Charles W. 
Woody of Hayward, CA; grandchildren, Todd U. Best and wife, Mary of Poso Flat, 
CA, Dr. Craig L. Best and wife, Carey of Boston, MA, Von L. Best and wife, 
Rosanne of Frisco, TX; stepgrandchildren, Carol Sparks and husband, Ron of 
Poso Flat, Lowell Saunders and wife, Charlotte of Plano, TX and Jake Saunders 
and wife, Gloria of Bakersfield, CA. Ava is also survived by seven great-
grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren, Ashley Best, Alissa Best, 
Julia Best, Rebecca Best, Colton Best, Maya Best, Avery Best, Jennifer Clare, 
Amanda Clare, Ryan Saunders, Andrew Saunders and Julian Saunders.
