Helen was born in 1909 and grew up in the back country of San Diego on her parents cattle ranch. She attended the University of California at Berkley where she graduated Magna Cum Laud. While teaching high school in Stockton, she met and married her husband of 65 years, John Young. When John and Helen moved to Bakersfield to establish Johns law practice, Helens focus shifted from her own career to that of supporting her husband and raising their three daughters. Helen demonstrated exuberance for life and a passion for learning. Her love of dancing, music, languages, horseback riding, the out-of-door, and travelingall of these she shared with, and passed on to, her family. She was an integral part of not only her childrens lives but the lives of her 6 grandchildren; she was a motivator, encourage, and financier of their education and travel experiences. She came to be lovingly known as Mom-mom. Helen and John moved to San Diego in 1976. Mom-mom became the center of home for so much of her family. She provided a home for her own mother who lived until the age of 104. She kept the fires burning for John as he traveled back and forth to Bakersfield to continue his practice of law. She provided a vacation retreat for all of her grandchildren. Four of her grandchildren actually made their home with Mom-mom at different times in their lives. For Mom-mom there was no questionher family came first. Helen remained passionate about politics, world affair, the environment, and helping those in need, till the end of her life. To her family, she continued to be a source of strength, a teacher of life and laughter, and the core of unconditional love. It is impossible to express how much she will be missed. Helen was preceded in death by her daughter, Patricia May and her husband, John Young. Her survivors include daughters, Sally MacGuire and Lucia DeSoto, and son-in-law, John DeSoto. She is survived by her six grandchildren and their spouses: Tish Beardsley, Alison and Brandon Abbott, Peter and Dara DeSoto, Mathew and Karen DeSoto, Kate May and Dwayne Chapman, and Beau May and Mary Pyland.
