Marchant 1916 - 2005 Graveside services will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in Union Cemetery for George S. Marchant, 88, who died January 18, 2005. Visitation will be held in the Mission Family Mortuary, 531 California Avenue, from 9:00 a.m. till 5:00 p.m. today. George was born October 3, 1916 in Windom, Texas and moved here with his family as a child. In 1936 he graduated from Kern County Union High School. A year later he married his high school sweetheart, Madeline Bertolaccini. During World War II, George was a Sergeant in the 1901 St. Aviation Engineer Battalion in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre of Operations and served in Korea. George and Madeline raised two children and were long time members of the Oildale community. George owned and operated his own welding business in Oildale for over 40 years and worked for several major oil companies including Texaco and Getty until his retirement in 1981. He was a 3rd Degree Mason and a member of the Caledonia Lodge. He loved to collect old things going to yard sales and tinkering with anything mechanical. He is preceded in death by his loving wife of over 58 years Madeline, his infant daughter, Carolyn, and his sister, Vivian Carlson. He is survived by his son and daughter-n-law, Ron and Charlene Marchant; his daughter and son-in- law, Carol and Ray Norman; his three grandchildren, Grant and Tracy Marchant and Matt Norman. His great-granddaughter Adrian Norman and a sister and brother-in-law, Hazel and William Slikker. George was devoted to his family and will greatly missed by them.
