Margaret was born on April 17, 1922 in Sparks, Okla. In her younger years she lived in Pond, on the outskirts of McFarland on a farm. She then moved into the town of McFarland. She moved to Tehachapi where she met and married Thomas Brown in 1955. She worked in the fields at Jacobsen Ranch and later owned Helen’s Café at the east end of Tehachapi Boulevard. In the 1960s, she also owned and ran the Monolith Café for a short while. She and Tom owned the Mobil gas station that was located on the corner of Robinson Street and Tehachapi Boulevard. They sold the station due to Tom’s health problems and moved to Bakersfield, where Margaret worked as a nurse’s aid at Memorial Hospital for 15 years until she retired. Tom passed away in 1974 and Margaret then returned to Tehachapi to be closer to her mother, Carrie Salmon, who passed away in 2000 at the age of 99. She gave years of memories, hearts full of laughter and left behind “gobs” of love. She will be deeply missed. Margaret is survived by a son, Louie Hobbs and his wife Darla; brother, Jimmy Salmon and his wife Charlene; grandchildren Leslie and Curtis Nelson, Lori and Prentice Woodard, Lynette Hobbs, Marcus and Christy White, and Wendy and Matthew Walker; great-grandchildren Nathan, Jamie, Jennie, Tyler, Carrie, Jessie, Charlcie, Clarice, Austin, Cassieta, Colton and Jonathon. She also left behind her very special friends Coy Blair, Mary Vickery and Donna McGehee. There will be no services. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society, Bakersfield Division, 1523 California Ave., Bakersfield, CA 93304.
