Merle was born in Amarillo, Texas, February 12, 1914 and passed away on to our Father in Heaven January 30, 2005 from Alzheimers Disease. His favorite quote was, It is not the size of the man, but the fight in the man that counts. Merle was a Marine veteran from World War II. He married Virginia May Goodhart on April 4, 1945, and that marriage lasted until her death in 1999. Merle moved to Bakersfield in 1950 and was Farm Manager for Porter Land Company for 17 years. He went to work for Kern County Land Company in 1961 which was acquired by Tenneco Oil Company, as farming superintendent of central ranches. In 1965, Merle and his family were sent to Australia by Tenneco to ascertain the profitability of cotton farming there. In 1969 he went to work for Couture Farms, from 1972 1977 he managed Almond Hullers Association Inc. in Delano. In 1978 until his retirement in 1983 he worked for Lawrence Vineyards in Delano. Merle was a devoted husband who took care of his wife, Virginia until her death. He is survived by his two daughters, Barbara Elsberry Ferguson and husband, Donald and Diana Elsberry Rich. He leaves behind five grandchildren, Mathew Ferguson, Jennifer Wood, Andrew Ferguson, Steven Rich, and Julie Gallagher; 14 great-grandchildren, Justin, Jordon, Logan, Taylor, Kiley, Emma, Zoe, Isabel, Seth, Jordan, Alex, Brittney, P.J. and Katie. Many qualities were taught by Merle to his two daughters: integrity, honesty, straight forwardness, and to never give up and fight for what you believe in. He will be greatly missed but his legacy will live on through eternity and beyond. Graveside services will be held Greenlawn Memorial Park, 3700 River Blvd., Wednesday, February 2, 2005, at 2:30 p.m. No visitation is scheduled.
