Jewell was born in Fresno on November 21, 1904. She attended Fresno Normal School and Four Cs Business College. Jewell was preceded in death by her parents, Nellie and James Brown; her two sisters, Jennie Robertson and Evelyn Dias and her beloved son, Hilary Bux LeRoux. Jewell was also preceded in death by her three husbands. Jewell was a successful and well known figure in Fresnos business community. In 1932, Jewell co-founded Valley Glass Company. In 1948 she expanded the company by opening a location in Bakersfield managed by her daughter, June and her son-in-law, Marvin Schroer. She continued to work full-time until 2002 after her 98th birthday. Jewell operated Valley Glass Co. with a characteristic elegance and style. Her most well known project was the installation of the glass exterior on Fresnos 21 story Del Webb Building in 1962. She was an excellent glazier, and could often be found participating in the installation of glass. Jewell was very active in the community. She was a member of Zonta International Business Women. She served on the 1962-63 Fresno County Grand Jury, the Board of Directors of the Easter Seal Society of Central California and the Fresno County United Way. She was a member of Candlelight Guild, Sunnyside Country Club, the Sequoia Club and the Downtown Club. She was a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International and a longtime parishioner of The Shrine of St. Therese. Jewell loved the outdoors. She was active in golfing, horseback riding, hunting and fishing. She loved travel and took her children on many trips that included destinations in Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia. Her favorite and frequent destination was Paris and its glamorous shopping areas. Jewell also found the shopping in Londons Rolls Royce showroom iresistible and she was easily recognizable as she drove her Corniche convertible to work every day. The family wishes to thank the many people whose loving assistance made it possible for Jewell to remain comfortably in her home. We especially give thanks for Dr. Pardini, and Dr. Gong, and Akiko, Louise, Sherri, Maria, Robbie, Jamie, Michele, Inga, Elitra and Diana. Our special thanks to the people at Oasis and Hinds Hospice. As a young woman, Jewell married Fred Dexter Taylor. She is survived by their daughter, June Schroer Sullivan of Bakersfield. In 1942, Jewell married Hilary Joseph Ray LeRoux and she began anew in the role of mother. In addition to their birth son, Buz, Jewell and Ray adopted four Irish children. Ray passed away in 1956. She is survived by these four children, John Joseph LeRoux, Brendan Oliver LeRoux and his wife, Danise, Joan Catherine LeRoux and Michele Therese LeRoux, all of Fresno. In 1960, Jewell married Homer McKinley Duke Schoonover. Duke passed away in 1982. In addition to her children, Jewell is survived by 8 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and 16 great-great- grandchildren. Visitation will be held at the Shrine of St. Therese Catholic Church on Wednesday, February 2, 2005, from 4-7 p.m. Recitation of the Rosary will follow at 7:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Shrine of St. Therese Catholic Church on Thursday, February 3, 2005, at 10:00 a.m. Entombment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery Mausoleum.
