He was born on September 24, 1921 in Bakersfield, CA. He was 83 years old. He joined the United States Marine Corps on December 8, 1941 and served in World War II and the Korean War, retiring as a Captain and a pilot. Harry then joined the newly formed Federal Aviation Administration and served as a Flight Inspector for twenty- nine years, retiring as the FAAs Chief Flight Inspector. While associated the FAA, he also worked with the U.S. Agency for International Development and the United Nations. He and his wife, Irene, who preceded him in death in November of 1996, traveled the world in his profession and they lived in Hawaii, Japan, Egypt, Mexico and Thailand and had many friends around the world. He lived in Atascadero for over twenty-five years and was very active in the Kiwanis Club and civic activities. He is survived by his two sons, Terry Hughes of Spokane, WA; Roger Hughes of Orinda, CA; grandchildren, Melissa and Erin Hughes of Los Angeles, CA; Ashleigh and Taylor Hughes of Spokane, WA. He is deeply beloved and will be missed by all who knew him. For those so inclined, please make donations in honor of Harry and Irene Hughes to the American Cancer Society. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, February 9, 2005, at 11:00 a.m., at Chapel of the Roses in Atascadero, CA.
