He worked as a cowboy for Rudnick Ranch in New Mexico and California before joining the service. He married Frances Jean Nevin (Jeannie) before enlisting in the Army Air Corp in 1939, where he was stationed in Hobbs, New Mexico. He promoted to Staff Sergeant as a flight engineer on B-17 Bombers. In 1943 he volunteered to transfer into the Army Infantry, holding his rank. He was part of Pattons Third Army involved in the relief of Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge as a Platoon Leader in a Guard Company for Combat Engineers. His forces helped liberate a German Concentration Camp, met the Russians on the Elbe River, and were part of the occupation forces in Germany at the end of WWII. After the war, he worked in the oil fields for Santa Fe Drilling with his stepdad, Pete Hensley. He later worked in the drilling dept. for Atlantic Richfield Company. In the early 1960s he went into business for himself, owning and operating service stations, a liquor store, and finally a gun shop. He moved his gun shop to Eugene, Oregon in 1967. After selling the business, he and Jeannie moved to Maui, Hawaii in 1971. Three years later they bought a farm in Brownsville, Oregon. Jeannie passed away in February, 1980. He later met and married Dawn Ward, and they moved to Meridian, Idaho. Ed passed away in Boise, Idaho, of complications from congestive heart failure. He was preceded in death by his eldest son, Robert (Bob) Penfield in November 1976. He is survived by his widow, Dawn, his sons, Frank Penfield, Lenard Penfield and wife, Carol, and granddaughter, Suellen Penfield, and her mother, Janice Penfield. A memorial service will be held in Meridian, Idaho, Sunday, February 20, at a private home.
