Joan Elizabeth Downing
1/13/1921 - 2/6/2005

Joan Elizabeth Downing was born on January 13, 1921, in Wellington, New 
Zealand. She died on February 6, 2005, at the age of 84, in Sacramento, 
California. She died at home with her loving daughters by her side, near her 
beautiful and peaceful garden. 

She is survived by her four daughters, Suzanne Kusener and husband, Walt; 
Virginia Perry and husband, Dennis; Janet Coughlin and husband, Edd; and 
Deborah Greenwood and husband, Jay. She will be missed by her seven 
grandchildren, Craig and Kara Kusener; Nicholas, Rebecca and Scott Coughlin; 
and Anna and Alison Greenwood. Joan also will be missed by many close 
relatives in New Zealand and Pennsylvania. Her loving husband, William Bill 
Edward Downing of Downingtown, Pennsylvania, preceded her in death in 1995.

Joan and Bill first met in New Zealand during World War II when Bill served 
there as an officer in the U.S. Navy. All of her devoted caregivers and 
friends helped ensure a wonderful life. The immediate family will be honoring 
her with a celebration of life in Santa Barbara, California where she will be 
buried alongside her husband overlooking the Pacific Ocean, a connection 
between California and New Zealand.
