Juanita is survived by her husband of 70 years, William Alving; her brother, Jay Eitel of Atherton; son, John Alving of Seattle; daughter, Marjory Alving of Los Altos; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was the daughter of the late Warren and Clara Eitel, formally of Los Gatos. Juanitas grandparents were early Santa Clara Valley settlers who traveled to California in covered wagons during the late 1850s. Juanita was active in many organizations during her busy life. She was a staunch conservative and belonged to numerous Republican groups. She was very involved in San Mateo county politics. Juanita was also concerned about the environment and led the fight to save Sugar Loaf Mountain and worked hard to support the original Save the Bay and Save the Redwoods organizations. After graduating from U.C. Berkeley in 1933, Juanita and Bill made their first home in the East Bay followed by a move to Southern California during WWII. They also lived in Bakersfield, CA and Salt Lake City, UT before settling for good in San Mateo in 1963 where Juanita taught history for many years at Burlingame High. She had many good friends and enjoyed her monthly bridge groups. She was an excellent cook and will be remembered for the special leg of lamb dinner she prepared for family gatherings. Juanita was a life member of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and was a leader in that organization wherever she lived. She will be missed by all who knew her. A memorial reception is planned for March 19, 11:00 a.m., at the Pilgrim Haven Fellowship Hall, 373 Pine Lane, Los Altos, CA 94022. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to: AAUW San Mateo Branch Education Foundation, P.O. Box 1239, San Mateo, CA 94401.
