Antongiovanni Rosary: Tues., Feb. 15, 7 p.m. Services: Wed., Feb. 16, 10 a.m. John M. Antongiovanni passed away peacefully on February 12, 2005, at home from complications of stomach cancer. He was 98 years old. He leaves a legacy of indescribable value, namely, a life of simple being and doing, almost entirely dependent upon his humility to accept himself and others exactly as they are. Through his living he taught us some of lifes greatest lessons; the harmony and balance of natures seasons; the blessings of good will and charity; the honor of raising and providing for his family. John was born in Cummings Valley to immigrant parents, Luigi and Elisabetta (Banducci) Antongiovanni. The third of ten children, and eldest of six boys, he seemed almost destined to a career of farming. His first language was Italian, his second farming. Formal education was sparse. He attended Kern County High School (present day Bakersfield High), but after only one and a half years circumstances required him to farm full-time. Growing operations led to greater independence. On November 21, 1936, John married Yole Riccomini at the old St. Francis Church and began his own family. From then on only he could summarize his life, Well, I farmed and saved a little and when I had enough I bought a piece (of land). Farming was different (during those years), you could make a living, and well, it was good to me. Until 1989, at the age of 83, John was involved in the day-to-day operations of farming. He is survived by his children, Linda and Frank McKenna, Judy and Tom Walsh, Stan and Kathleen Antongiovanni, Jane and Gary Uhalt, Irene and John Stevens, Gabrielle and Bill Vanherweg; 28 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; his sister, Olga and Don Jacobs; sisters-in-law, Lucille Riccomini, Mary Cortopassi, Albertina Riccomini and Helen Antongiovanni. He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Yole; grandson, Peter Antongiovanni; his parents and five brothers, Vincent, Thomas, Ugo, David and Eugene; three sisters, Natalina, Ida and Catherine. Recitation of the Rosary will be at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 15, 2005 and Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 16, 2005, both at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 900 H Street. Rev. Craig F. Harrison will officiate and interment will follow at Union Cemetery, King & Potomac Streets, Bakersfield. Pallbearers will be his grandsons. Special thanks to all who assisted in caring for John, especially Marilyn, Ruby and Maria; from Hoffmann Hospice, Claudia, Kathleen and Elizabeth; from Caring Touch, Frances and Sharon. Memorial donations may be made to The Florence Wheeler Cancer Center, c/o Mercy Hospital, 2215 Truxtun Ave., Bakersfield, CA 93301. Visitation will be today from 1-5 p.m. Doughty-Calhoun-OMeara Funeral Directors Additional Comments: Volunteer submission - No relation to deceased.
