Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park, 3700 River Blvd. Joe will be remembered as always helping others. Joe enjoyed hunting, fishing, swimming, golfing and being a plasterer at trade. Joseph Papasergia was born on August 20, 1920, in Fargo, North Dakota to Salvatore and Annunciata Papasergia. He attended Sacred Heart Academy High School. He was an outstanding hockey player and football player. He was drafted from the public school to play for Sacred Heart Academy. He was quite an athlete as a football player and on the horizontal bars. He enjoyed his summers at Pelican Lake in Minnesota with his brother, Tony, and friends Shelly and Marshall Hanna. He enjoyed sailing and fishing. We remember Dad telling us when he and the Hanna boys had tipped the sail boat over, being stranded for hours on the lake until someone would rescue them or until they turned the sail boat upright. When he was 13 years old he bought a .22 rifle and loved to hunt rabbits which he would bring home for mom to cook. Joe went to work with his Dad at the Northern Pacific Railroad. When WWII broke out, he enlisted into the Navy in the 51st Battalion of the C.B.s. He was deployed to the Elution Islands, and the South Pacific. When Joe returned home on leave he spent time with his parents in Fargo, North Dakota. He would travel to Bakersfield, CA to visit with his sister, Jan. He said he got tired of the Dakota winters, and decided to relocate to Bakersfield where he went to work as a plasterer for George Rosendahl. He was a plasterer for approximately 30 years. He was very proud of his scroll work in the Fox Theater, and his work on Harvey Auditorium and Mercy Hospital. I know my dad had a talent to his trade. He was an expert at applying patch work. When he finished, you never knew that there had been previous damage. Joe met and married Margaret Toth in Bakersfield and they traveled to many places including Italy to see Joes family. They had two sons, Pat and Dario. Pat was just promoted to Captain for the Bakersfield City Fire Dept. Dario heads the Tool and Safety Dept., for Ferguson Ent., in Fargo, North Dakota. Joe returned to North Dakota and the land of 10,000 lakes for summer vacations each year. Dad loved to fish, I remember dad dragging me out of bed at 6:00 in the morning to go fishing. I also remember my mom taking my dad on a cruise, he enjoyed that very much. Dad also loved to play golf and work on trucks. He played golf with Archie Parks and Big Al Todahl. I remember as a kid my uncle Archie and my dad working on his truck late into the night. Joe was a loving father and grandfather and was well liked by everyone who had the honor of meeting him, he would go out of his way to help anyone. He never complained about anything. He was a very thoughtful person, always helping others. Joe is survived by son, Pat and wife, Michelle; grandchildren, Adam and Meagan of Bakersfield and son, Dario and wife, Deborah of Fargo, North Dakota and step-grandchildren, Tommy and Craig; brothers, John and Tony Papasergia; sisters, Jan Rosendahl, Yolanda Griffiths, Rosena Todahl, Joan Wallace and Maria Parks. Casketbearers will be Mark Papasergia, Mike Papasergia, Brian Griffiths, David Todahl, Archie Parks and Sam Parks. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to your favorite charity. Visitation will be today, 3:00 9:00 p.m. at Greenlawn Mortuary.
