Dave attended several elementary schools and three high schools because his dad was with the government and the family moved to different locations. He attended high school in Modesto for his senior year where he met Sandra, his wife of 41 years. Dave and Sandra were married in 1963, just after Dave had graduated from Naval Flight School and was commissioned an ensign. They lived in Coronado and Dave was assigned to VS-33 aboard aircraft carrier USS Bennington. He flew the S-2, designed for anti-submarine warfare. Dave made three cruises to the Western Pacific into harm’s way near Vietnam. Dave left the Navy in 1967 and joined Continental Airlines. He retired as a captain on the 777, flying from Houston to London, Paris and Tokyo. Looking for a retirement home that fit their many criteria, Dave and Sandra came to Tehachapi. Willow Springs Raceway, nearness to family, clean air, and the small town all were factors in their move. Little did they know of the wonderful people they would come to call dear friends. Dave loved his motorcycles and racing at "Willow." He attended advanced racing technique schools with riders that were one-third his age. He raced his Aprilia as often as he could, until the "tipover" on turn three and the broken collarbone that ended his racing days. But, he still loved to ride the quiet back roads of the area with good buddies. Dave also went back to a game of his youth — baseball. He played with the Super Group of senior softball men and women. Tuesday and Thursday evenings brought out the teams to the call of “Play Ball!” Dave was a very capable guy on his computer. He communicated with friends and relatives far and near. He spent hours working with Sandra on projects for the Daughters of the American Revolution and the University Women. He was learning a lot about genealogy and finding "new ancestors" for Sandra. July 2004 was a turning point. Dave was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. All of the technology and doctors at UCLA Medical Center could not help him. He passed away very quietly at home, with Sandra and daughter, Susan, on Feb. 4. Dave leaves behind wife, Sandra of Bear Valley Springs; sister, Kathie and brother, Mike, both of Loveland, Colo.; son, David, a San Diego city firefighter and paramedic, his wife Laura and their two sons, Andrew and Adam; daughter, Susan, a relocation coordinator with United Van Lines in Burbank; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law that were more like true brothers and sisters; many cousins, nieces, nephews; and one dear aunt. A memorial service was held on Sunday, Feb. 13 at the Oak Tree Country Club in Bear Valley Springs. Friends Ted Rutherford and Doug Stone officiated with Dave's son David giving the eulogy. A farewell memorial service is scheduled for Feb. 27 at 9 a.m. on the deck of the U.S.S. Midway in San Diego. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the San Diego Aircraft Carrier Museum, 910 N. Harbor Drive, San Diego, CA 92101. Wood Family Funeral Service handled the cremation arrangements.
