Growing up in post World War I London, he learned the secret of thriving in adversity. As a boy, he was sent to live in a sanitarium for a year because of a misdiagnosis. In the depression, his family struggled and his father became injured. The eldest of four, he left school to work in a factory at age 14. Soon after, his mother died from illness. World War II began and London was bombed constantly. He patrolled neighborhoods to ensure lights were out and to dispose of unexploded bombs. As soon as he was old enough, he joined the army and began fighting in the jungles of India and Burma. Danger and harsh conditions didn’t keep him from learning about the culture and wildlife and enough local language to interpret for soldiers. He witnessed fertility rites in which girls kissed the heads of cobras, he caught butterflies, and on his only leave in four years walked to the 12,000 foot level of Mt. Everest. He also read everything he could find. Discharged as a sergeant, he left sad memories behind and traveled to Canada, where he met and married Isobel, his wife for 36 years until her death in 1986. They started anew as citizens of the United States, a country they always loved and admired. He worked for an airline, sold optical equipment and finally retired as a senior station officer for Los Angeles Police Department. He retired in Bear Valley Springs where he was active in the community. A mountaintop home he designed had an observatory for his telescope, a laboratory for his microscope, a library for his books and room for classical statues and antiques. John is survived by his daughter, Barbara, who edits publications for her church, her daughter and son, who was awarded a Purple Heart in Iraq; son, Brian, a professor of philosophy and biblical studies, and his wife Donna and their two children. Bear Valley Church will host a memorial at 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 19.
