Arnold Services: Sat., Feb. 19, 10 a.m. Olen W. Arnold was born on August 22, 1943 in Enigma, Georgia to Olen Emerson and Sarah Chamness Arnold. After spending his early years on a small family farm, Olens family moved to Lakeland, Florida until, at age 17, he entered the United States Navy. Olen served his country honorably for four years as an electronics specialist on nuclear submarines, including time at sea during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Olen married his wife and lifelong partner, Carolyn Terry Pointek on July 17, 1966. Olens desire to better his family led them across the country from Florida to California, back to Florida and, finally home, to Bakersfield in 1981, where he took over the local Burger King franchise. Olen was a very active member of the local business community. In recent years, Olen devoted much time to his love of the outdoors and hunting. He founded the Westside Waterfowl Club, a club dedicated to restoring native wetlands and upland habitat and ensuring the preservation of our nations hunting heritage. It was at the place he loved so well that his life was ended in a tragic accident on February 13, 2005. Olen was preceded in death by his father, Olen Emerson Arnold; his sister, Vera Christine Arnold and his brother, James Edward Arnold. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Terry; his two children, Scott David Arnold and Stephanie Arnold Leyendecker; his brother, Everett Arnold; and sisters, Deborah Lavallie, Iris Stout, and Iris Lake; and his two grandchildren, the lights of his life, Christopher Nicholas Arnold, and Joeli Grace Leyendecker. Visitation will be on Friday, February 18, 2005, at Hillcrest Memorial Park, 9101 Kern Canyon Road, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Services will be held on Saturday, February 19, 2005, in the Chapel at Hillcrest Memorial Park at 10:00 a.m. Olen Arnold was a fine and honorable man.
