Her mothers family, the Huniwells, came to California in 1852 and started ranching in Bridgeport. Her fathers family came from Canada to Traver, California, and then to Kern County in 1900. The West family members were ranchers and farmers in the Weedpatch, Poso Flat, and Glennville areas. Lou Anne attended Longfellow School in 1944, the Washington Junior High in 1945, East High School from 1947 to 1950, then on to Oregon University in 1951, where she met her husband, James Kennedy Holmes, and they were married in 1953. After being married, they moved to San Luis Obispo where James Holmes attended Cal Poly. They then moved to Poso Flat in 1955 where James K. Holmes established a cattle ranching business on Lou Annes families ranch near Granite Station. She was very proud of her familys heritage and California roots. She was involved in many charitable organizations such as Kern County Cattlewomen, which she joined in 1960, and was president in 1963. She was named Cattlewoman of the year in 1986. Lou Anne was instrumental in establishing Ag in the classroom, which is a California program where they taught teachers how to teach agriculture. She helped create the Cattlewomens Scholarship Fund. Herself and Julie Anthis came up with the idea of Western Culture Day at the Tracy Ranch which was a fund raiser for the Cattlemans Association. In 2000-2001, she received an award from the American Association of University Women in recognition of her accomplishments. She was a 20 year member of Linns Valley Poso Flat School Board, involved in the Guild House for 20 plus years; a former member of Junior League, and very dedicated to any cause she became involved in. She is best remember for her undaunting courage in the face of adversity and her positive outlook on life. She was overjoyed with the care and tenderness that her family and friends showed her during her illness. Lou Anne was a loving mother and a great friend to many people. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Alice West; her husband, James K. Holmes; and her daughter, Lisa Jane Holmes. Surviving her are her daughter, Becky Johns and husband, Steve; sons, Chuck Holmes and wife, Suzanne, and Mitch Holmes; six grandchildren, Jamie Ward, Shannon Johns, Tera, Gina, Chellsey, and Brookey Holmes; brother, Mike West and wife, Carmen; nephew, Jeff West; and niece, Michael Kennedy and husband, John. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kern County Cattlewomens Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 8143, Bakersfield, CA. 93386. The family wishes to express their thanks to everyone at Bakersfield Blood and Cancer Center, Teresa Repela and all of her old school buddies for being there for her through the years. No visitation is scheduled.
