Mr. Schilling was born in Sacramento, California on October 18, 1916 to Henry R. Schilling and Mary Russ Schilling and grew up on a citrus and olive ranch in Oroville, Calfornia. He was a resident of Mill Valley, CA for 48 years, before moving, in his retirement, to Sonoma, CA in 1994. Always a Californian at heart, he graduated from Oroville High School in 1934, where he met and later married his wife of 67 years, Ruth Roberts Schilling. He attended Chico State College from 1934 to 1938 where he was a member of the Iota Sigma Fraternity. Later he moved to San Francisco and was employed with Pacific Motor Trucking Co. until World War II began. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1943 and served honorably with the Transportation Corps in Anchorage, Alaska protecting the Alaska Railroad and later at the Panama Canal. He was discharged as a Sergeant in 1946. Upon returning to the Bay Area, he returned to work with PMT as a sales manager working throughout his career in San Francisco, Oakland and Burlingame. He was an active member of the San Francisco Transportation Club. He settled in Mill Valley with Ruth, where she was employed as a registered nurse, and where they raised their two children. He retired from PMT in 1978 after 37 years. In Mill Valley, he served on the Board of the Alto Sanitary District as Vice-Chairman and was active in Boy Scouts and Little League. In retirement, he was a director of the Alto- Richardson Bay Fire Protection District for eight years. He was a 49-year member of Our Lady of Mt Carmel Church, and served as President of the Mt. Carmel School PTG in the 60s. He was active in the building fund effort to construct the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. In retirement and while still in good health, he and Ruth were avid 49ers fans, and enjoyed traveling around the United States, South America, Mexico and several wonderful cruises, as well as golfing, reading, gardening, and the good life of the Bay Area. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Henry Schilling of Oroville, CA and his sister, Roberta Schilling Hart of Allegheny, CA. He is survived by his devoted wife, Ruth and his two children, Stephen W. Schilling of Bakersfield, CA and Lucinda S. Whaley and son-in-law, Robert Whaley of Spokane, WA and three granddaughters, Christina and Mari Schilling and Elaine Whaley, numerous nieces and nephews, and many lifelong friends of all ages. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, February 25, 2005, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 3 Oakdale Avenue, Mill Valley at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow on February 26, 2005, at the Sutter Cemetery in Sutter, CA at 11:00 a.m. The family suggests memorial donations be made to the Guide Dogs for the Blind, P.O. Box 3950, San Rafael, CA 94912-3950, or to the Cataldo Catholic School, 455 West 18th Ave., Spokane, WA 99203, or the charity of your choice.
