Laureen spent part of her childhood in Atolia, CA where her father James Platt was a justice of the peace and grocery store owner and her mother Leone was the postmaster. While still in elementary school during IQ testing, it was determined that Laureen scored high enough to skip the next two grades. The family moved to Lone Pine in 1944 when Laureen was 10 years old and in the 7th grade. Laureen eventually attended Lone Pine Union High School. On August 23, 1952, Laureen married her high school sweetheart, Richard Hopkins. Once Richard was out of the Navy, they settled in Bishop where they raised four children until 1972 when Richard was transferred and they moved the family to Bakersfield, CA. After the birth of her four children, Laureen was a stay-at-home mom until the youngest child was school age and Laureen began working part time as a bookkeeper for the Rexall Drug Store in Bishop. Once the family moved to Bakersfield, Laureen continued her bookkeeping career until her retirement. Laureen loved her husband, her children and the rest of her family.
