She lived in a Catholic boarding school and with her family in West Virginia as a young girl. She graduated from Central High School in Washington, D.C. in 1943. She lived and worked in D.C. until she met her husband of 51 years, Harry Allen Mathew. They were married in Quantico, Virginia on June 9, 1951 while Harry was in the Marine Corps. They moved to Bakersfield, California where they settled and raised a family. Mabel worked for a title company in Bakersfield and raised her children while she went back to school to get her teaching credential. She graduated from Fresno State College with a Bachelor of Arts in 1966. She taught for the Bakersfield City School District for 23 years until she retired in December of 1989. She and Harry lived in their house on Renegade spending their time enjoying their children and grandchildren. In 1996, they moved out to a farm, off of Bear Mountain Blvd., with their son-in-law and daughter, Rick and Carol Clark and her family, who cared for them. They were frequently visited by their son, Mike and daughter, Cathy and their families. Her beloved husband Harry died on February 6, 2002. Her first great-grandchild, Jacob, was born February 16, 2002 and became a light in her life until she died. Mabel lived for her children and grandchildren. Harry and Mabels doors were always open to the various groups of their childrens friends, who hung out at their house. Mabel was always there with a warm smile and would fix the kids a meal day or night. Some of Cathys friends fondly called their home Mabes Place. As a teacher, at Colonial Baker Elementary School, she was devoted to and touched the lives of many children. She was a kind loving woman, who cared for her family and all who crossed her path. Mabel is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Mike and Penny Mathew; daughters and son-in-laws Carol and Rick Clark all of Bakersfield and Catherine and Steve Ellis of Alaska; a married granddaughter and her husband Rhea Ann and Marko Bonilla; grandchildren Scott and Cole Mathew, Sarah, Amanda, and Christina Clark, Danielle, Joshua, and Aaron Ellis, and great- grandson Jacob Portrey. Mabel was surrounded by her family and died peacefully with her daughters at her side. She went to be with her heavenly Father and Papa. Graveside will be held in Greenlawn Memorial Park, 3700 River Blvd., Saturday February 26, at 11:00 A.M. The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to any childrens organization that will enhance or save the life of a child.
