Manning, Ph. D. 1920 - 2005 John Manning, formerly of Bakersfield, passed away in Las Vegas, NV at the end of January following a brief illness. He served his country with distinction in WWII, rising to the rank of Warrant Officer in the European Theatre. After the war, he married Eva Gunnarson of Seattle, and they came to California where he completed his education, earning a Doctorate in geology from Stanford University. His professional specialty was ground water, and he worked in that field for many years throughout the San Joaquin Valley. When the Cal State Bakersfield campus opened, he was one of the founding faculty members, and became known as Dr. Manning to legions of students. In retirement he enjoyed traveling and writing, completing several textbooks about his field of hydrology. He is survived by his wife of 59 years Eva, of Las Vegas, NV; son John of Las Cruces, NM, son and daughter-in-law Mark and Carol of Bakersfield; and five grandsons. No services are scheduled.
