He was born on August 2, 1921, in Coalinga, Ca, the son of T.J. and May Garner. He was proud to be a Californian Native American. After graduating from Coalinga High in 1940, he went to work for Shell Oil Co. Drafted while working there, he served three years with the U.S. Army, World War II in the Western Pacific Theatre earning a rating of expert rifleman among others. Returning to Coalinga and Shell he married Hazel Reed in 1947 and subsequently worked at several locations, upon retirement after 43 years he returned to Goleta in 1987. Hunting was his passion as noted at his homes back patio. He loved to talk hunting and fishing to all especially the new ones the times spent in the Sierra Nevada mountains with his jeep and buddies is never to be forgotten by all. Nelson is survived by his wife, Hazel of 57 years; his son, Don of McHenry, IL; his grandchildren, Shawn, Kelsey, Beth and Devin all of Illinois. Also by many, many loyal and loving relatives and friends. Graveside services will be held Saturday, March 5, 2005, at 11:00 a.m., in Greenlawn Memorial Park, 3700 River Blvd., Bakersfield, CA. Visitation will be Friday, March 4, from 10:00 a.m. 9:00 p.m. and Saturday, 8:30 10:30 a.m. Greenlawn Mortuary Funeral Directors Additional Comments: Volunteer submission - No relation to deceased.
