She was born in Mejls, Denmark, on August 21, 1924, to Karl and Methea Thomsen. Margrethe was one of nine children, born and raised on a farm. At age 8 she learned lifes lessons quickly after the passing of her father. Following in the footsteps of her mother, Margrethe developed her work ethic, humble attitude and devotion to family. Margrethe married Borge Damgaard Hansen on Feburary 17, 1946. They had two children, Flemming and Dan. Margrethe supported her husband and two sons through a decade of movement. Beginning in 1952, the family relocated three times between Canada and Denmark before settling in Bakersfield in 1961. She was dedicated to the success of her family, not only as a wife and mother, but also by taking the initiative to start a successful housekeeping service. In 1972, the family started Hansens Moving & Storage. Margrethes self sacrifice and commitment was an integral part to the growth and success of the business. She maintained a respected role until her final days. She was a self-proclaimed Country Girl. She loved nature and being outdoors, from riding her bicycle to taking Sunday drives through the mountains. She enjoyed gardening, painting, and going to garage sales. She mastered the English language by reading the dictionary and doing crossword puzzles. She was happiest spending time with her family and close friends. Every summer for the past fifteen years, Margrethe and her husband, Borge, returned to Denmark to be with family and friends. Ironically, it was there, surrounded by her siblings and son, she passed away. A memorial service was held at St. Jacobs Church in Varde, on Friday, July 2, 2004, where Margrethe was baptized, confirmed and married. Margrethe was preceded in death by her husband, Borge Damgaard Hansen; her parents, Karl and Mathea; brothers, Svend, Soren, Hans and Vagner. She is survived by her sisters, Kristiana, Kirstine, Lilly; brother, Gunnar; sisters- in-law, Ruth and Frieda. She is also survived by her son, Flemming and wife, Ann; her son, Dan; her grandchildren, Christina, Ryan and wife, Julie, Joseph and wife, Erin, Jennifer and Michael; and numerous family and friends in Denmark, Bakersfield and Canada. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 10, 2004, 10:30 a.m., at Greenlawn Southwest Memorial Chapel; interment will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to Friends of Mercy Foundation, 2215 Truxtun Ave., Bakersfield, CA 93301.
