Long 11/15/1922 - 3/1/2005 Harry E. Long, of Shell Beach, died in his home on March 1st, at age 82. Born in Bakersfield, California, he attended what was then Kern Union High School, where he excelled in football, track and socializing. Most summers he spent with his grandmother at the Oceano Pavilion, which she bought in the 1930's and ran as a dance hall, dinner house, and local landmark on the beach. Harry attended St. Marys College and was a dominant player on the football team until the outbreak of WWII, when he enlisted in the Marine Corps, serving in both the First Defense Battalion, as well as the Third Marine Division. Returning home after the war, he married his high school sweetheart, Nora Brite, and raised two children, first in Bakersfield, and then in the 1960's, moving his family to the coast he loved. He worked as an electrician (IBEW) for more than 50 years in both Kern and San Luis Obispo counties, with a short time out to start the Surfside Restaurant with his brother Joseph. He was a founding member of the Oceano Elks Lodge, an avid golfer at Black Lake and San Luis Bay Golf Clubs, and at one time, a great dancer with the Squire and Dame Dance Club. He was also one of the founding members of the Eleven Oclock Christmas Tree Association. He is survived by a daughter, Beth and her family of Whidbey Island; a son, Jeff and his family of Eureka, as well as two brothers-in-law, (Ed and Bert), numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many good friends. An informal gathering of family and friends is planned at his home on March 12th, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. At his request there will be no funeral, and he will be quietly interred at Los Osos Valley Cemetery next to his wife, Nora. In lieu of flowers, remembrance can be made in his name to Hospice Partners of the Central Coast, with special thanks to Donna Silva, RN.
