After a lengthy battle with lung disease, he went to meet his Savior peacefully at home surrounded by his family. Jim was born in Jenkins, Barry County, Missouri to Clyde and Erma Padgett. He had seven siblings, Stone, Ray, Lorraine, Clara, Lyle, Marie and Marlin. Jim was an Interior Decorator for Sears from 1951 to 1988. When he retired, he became President of their retiree group for a number of years. He served as the Secretary/Treasurer for the Oildale Kiwanis Club for 5 years. He was a welcomed parent volunteer on the Fairfax School Recreation Board from 1952 to 1974 and a much loved grandparent volunteer at Sunrise Christian School for a number of years. Jim and Audrey Claretta Elliott, his childhood sweetheart, were united in marriage on November 4, 1945 in Missouri, the service was officiated by Brother Clovis Cook. They moved to Bakersfield in 1946, settled in and made a home for their family and nurtured numerous lifetime friendships. Jim is preceded in death by his loving parents, Clyde Dewey and Erma Elizabeth Padgett and brother, Ray Padgett. He is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Claretta Padgett; daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Jim Mills of Marston, NC; sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Bonnie Padgett and Leon and Kathy Padgett of Bakersfield; 5 grandchildren, Mark and wife, Lynn Mills, Steven and wife, Staci Mills of NC, Tim Padgett, Terra Padgett and Josh Padgett, all of Bakersfield; 2 great-granddaughters, Brittany Mills and Jennifer Mills both of NC. He will be greatly missed by three loving nephews, Doyle and Nancy Elliott, Carl and Sue Elliott and Denny and Sandra Elliott; plus many friends and neighbors, too numerous to count. Jim accepted the Lord at an early age and was baptized by Irvine Waters in Missouri. Jim was a major founding father of the established Church of Christ on Brundage Lane in Bakersfield, the Church of Christ in Arvin and the Church of Christ on Planz Road. Above all else, he loved his Lord, his church and his family. He is gone from our presence but he is in the presence of our Lord and Savior, where there is no more pain and suffering and no more night. Rest easy Dad and well meet you there.
