Randy Chamblee of First Southern Baptist Church of Buttonwillow will officiate. Bernice Wanda Olsen was born in Laton, California on March 16, 1910 to Walter and Carrie Bristol. Most of her early childhood and teenage years were spent in Chatsworth in the San Fernando Valley where she met and married Teddy Olsen on June 28, 1928. They farmed in that area until 1934 and then moved to Buttonwillow where Teddy, his brother, Leland and their father began a farming operation that lasted until recent years. Bernice was a housewife all of her adult life devoting herself and supporting her husband and four daughters in any and all activities in which they were involved. She was a 4-H leader for many years and wherever they traveled she was there albeit the Cow Palace in San Francisco, Great Western in Los Angeles, the Kern County Fairs or 4-H camp. She loved the Lord with all her heart and was an active and faithful member of the Buttonwillow Community Baptist Church for many years. She especially loved leading the high school and college age groups and taught Sunday School and Bible Study for as long as she was able. When Buttonwillows First Southern Baptist Church closed its doors for lack of funds and participation, she and two of her friends pooled their limited resources and helped build it into the great little church it is today. For many years she was active in PTA and Buttonwillow community affairs. Bernice was preceded in death in 1983 by her husband, Teddy, of 55 years; grandsons, Teddy Olsen and Ricky Paslay; sisters, Ruth Olsen and Rita Fox. She is survived by her daughters, Janet Zanola of Lemoore, Helen Suorez, Barbara Harris and Lois Paslay, all of Bakersfield; special nephew, Marvin Jones and his wife, Julia of Bakersfield; grandchildren, Michael Suorez and his wife, Nancy, Steven Suorez and his wife, Lynn, Mark Suorez and his wife, Paula, Patrice Shinault and her husband, Michael, Robert Scott and his wife, Sherri, Leland Scott and his wife, Debbie, Sharon De Los Santos, Gary Zanola and his wife, Julie, Lisa Polder and her husband, Bruce and Tina Chedester and her husband, Jeff; as well as 33 great-grandchildren, 11 great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
