Jerry, as his friends called him, was born to Milton C. Wedel and Margaret L. Wedel October 19, 1934, in Wasco, CA. He graduated from Wasco Union High School in 1953 and attended Biola College in La Habra, CA. Jerry, who knew no strangers, enjoyed life by working and playing hard. Growing up on a farm, Jerry felt at home working along side of farmers, as he began his career as a water well contractor in 1966. Jerry purchased Johnson Drilling Co., which became the family business that his wife, Linda and children, Nick and Joy will carry on. Jerry was a horseman and Linda encouraged this hobby when she bought him a horse as an engagement gift. As an equestrian, he loved to trail ride with his friends, or chauffer his children to horse shows, and had a passion for the sport of polo. Jerry was an enthusiastic hunter of dove, quail and duck. He also enjoyed playing tennis along side of his wife, Linda, as well as traveling together to various spots around the world such as Spain, Hawaii and Alaska. Later in life, Jerry and Linda became involved with Teen Challenge International, a non-profit drug recovery and prevention program, as they began serving on the board and supporting various annual fundraisers. It became their passion in life to see God transform lives of addictions into people free to serve God and mankind. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Bakersfield Teen Challenge. Those who survive him will treasure his memory include his wife of 48 years, Linda Wedel; daughter, Jill Gallagher and husband, Jim, Joy Ash and husband, Brian; sons, Nick Wedel and wife, Christa, Randy Wedel and wife, Cathy; grandchildren, Justin Wedel, Jennifer Wedel, Steven Banfi, Daniel Wedel, Zachary Ash and Taylor Ash; sisters, Bonita Macahilig and husband, Burt, Rebecca Beebe and husband, Dwayne, Joan Goertzen, Janet Mease and husband, Rick; brothers, Don Wedel and wife, Vivian, Andrew Wedel and wife, Priscilla; and many other friends and loved ones. Though Jerry will be greatly missed, we are at peace in the knowledge that he is with his Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. There will be a graveside service held at the Wasco Cemetery at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 9, 2005, followed by a Memorial Celebration at the Shafter Teen Challenge.
