Fr. Ralph Belluomini will be the celebrant and cremation will follow. She was born in Bakersfield to Arthur and Ophelia Padilla. Despite suffering a coma as an infant, she attended local schools and graduated from East Bakersfield High School in 1985. Emelia participated in programs through Kern Regional Center and BARC. In 1981 she was picked by the Shriners Club to be the Potato Bowl Queen. She loved to read novels, listen to country music and was a wrestling fanatic. She was especially noted for striking up conversations with everyone who would lend her an ear. She was a very genuine person and would not hesitate to give her honest opinion. Emelia will be remembered by those she knew and loved for her frequent phone calls and her hearty laugh. Her calls will be greatly missed by all of us. She was preceded in death by her mother, Ophelia Padilla. She is survived by her estranged husband, Paul Cottengim; her father, Arthur Padilla; sisters, Denise, Mary Lou and Regina Padilla; nephews, Armando Gomez and Roberto Vazquez and niece, Victoria Vazquez, all of Bakersfield, CA; several aunts, uncles and cousins and a special uncle, Robert Padilla, who she especially loved in his rabbit suit. Visitations will be from 9 a.m. till 5 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in the Mission Family Mortuary. Casketbearers will be Armondo Gomez, Roberto Vazquez, Victoria Vazquez, Louis Padilla Jr., Thomas Herrera Jr., and Kathy Gonzales. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Padilla family in care of Mission Family Mortuary.
