He began his professional life in Iowa, serving in the National Health Service Corps, practicing internal medicine and emergency medicine for 8 years. Dr. Downie moved with his family to Bakersfield in 1984 when he accepted a faculty position in the emergency department residency program at Kern Medical Center where he worked for the next 18 years, until 2002. Bob leaves his wife of 34 years, Beth Downie, three daughters and two sons-in- law: Joy Elizabeth and Todd Martin of Visalia; Tiffany Noel and Brian Broaddus of Spokane, WA; and Melody Diane Downie of Bakersfield. He is survived by his brother, Dr. David Downie, of Cupertino, California, his sister, Carol Jones of Sleepy Hollow, New York, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Dr. Downie will be remembered for his many years as a caring, dedicated physician who always gave 100% to his patients and to the young physicians in training. He was an active member of Northminster Presbyterian Church of Bakersfield. Bobs favorite pastimes were trout fishing, June lake trips, boating, snow skiing, building model boats and trains. He was an avid sports fan, especially of the LA Dodgers. His love for the Lord was demonstrated by his generosity to his family, his church, his co-workers, friends and patients. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. The family extends their gratitude for all the doctors, health professionals and friends who helped him in these last few years of declining health.
