The family moved to San Bernardino when Ray Jr. was seven (7) years old. Ray attended schools there, and as a youngster he delivered newspapers every morning and then rode his bicycle to class. During his high school years he worked after classes on weekends at Hilbigs Drug Store. Somehow the energetic Ray found time to play basketball and perform as the left-handed pitcher on the San Bernardino Cardinals champion baseball team. Ray joined the U.S. Army in 1943 and served proudly as a paratrooper in the South Pacific during WWII. After the war he returned home to San Bernardino and his wife, the former Betty Wilson. He attended San Bernardino Valley College, and later was signed by the San Diego Padres of the Coast League. He played professional ball as a pitcher for five (5) years. He then went to work for McMahons Furniture Company, retiring after 34 years as Supervisor in the San Diego area. Raymond Fortier was preceded in death by Betty, his wife of 52 years; and their son, Andrew. He is survived by his second wife, Gloria Downing Matson; daughters, Kristi Hurry and Ellen Jackson; and sons, Matt Fortier and Gig Fortier. He also leaves eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A celebration of Rays life will be held at Wesley United Methodist Church, 3030 Niles St. (corner of Niles & Oswell), on July 30, at 2:00 p.m. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Wesley United Methodist Church, a favorite charity, or to Hospice.
