Winter March 23, 1923 July 22, 2004 Services: Sat., July 31, 5 p.m. Fred was born March 23, 1923 and passed away at home July 22, 2004 after a short illness. He was a member of a pioneer family who came from Scotland and settled in Kern County in 1862. His great-grandparents formed a ranch in the Tehachapi mountains south of the old Tejon Ranch headquarters on El Paso Creek, 14 miles east of Grapevine. Fred was raised on the family ranch where he enjoyed cowboying and breaking horses. He was the cowboys cowboy. Fred went to school in Bakersfield and graduated from Kern County High School in 1941. He met and married Joyce Longoria in 1943 and together they had three of their five children on the Winter Ranch. Fred enjoyed his chosen careers of ranching (and day working for other ranchers) and operating heavy equipment. He was a member of the Operating Engineers Union, Local 12. Fred was proud of his wartime service as a Staff Sergeant in the 2nd Armored Division (Hell On Wheels), 41st A.I.R. the Division was the first American outfit into Berlin and served as honorary initial occupation force until relieved by permanent forces. They were the Honorary Guard for the Potsdam Conference and were viewed by world leaders Truman, Churchill, and Stalin. His battles were noted as Rhineland, the Ardennes and Central Europe. Fred was happy to relate his experiences to anyone who was interested in those events. Freds retirement years were spent living in the mountains surrounding the Glennville area where his children and grandchildren visited and enjoyed fishing, horseback riding and other parts of ranch and mountain life with him. Fred was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Archie and Henry, his daughter, Kathryn and son, John. He is survived by his wife, Joyce; daughter, Julia Bell of Sacramento; daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Jerry Lunde of Santa Ynez; daughter, Liz Winter of Bakersfield; grandchildren, Seth Wolford of Reno, Bonnie Wagner of Plantation, Florida, Teri Davies of Temecula, Aaron Titus of Arroyo Grande, Jesse Hering and Jackson Hering of Bakersfield, Amy Bell of Mammoth and one special great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Winter Wagner of Florida. The family gives thanks to Optimal Hospice and especially Lori Callaham. There will be a memorial Service and a celebration of Freds life at the Greenhorn Mountain Veterans Association Hall in Glennville, California on July 31, 2004, at 5:00 p.m. Additional Comments: Volunteer submission - No relation to deceased.
