Merrill IN LOVING MEMORY James C. Merrill, 79, passed away July 21, 2004. Mr. Merrill was born on October 1, 1924, in Cedar Falls, Iowa and resided in Kern County for 10 years. He graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1942 and Iowa State Teachers College in 1950 with a BA in Music Education. For 43 years he taught music at the high school and college levels. Mr. Merrill was an honorary life member and Master Adjudicator for the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association, He was a member of Phi Mu Alpha, Toastmasters, Iowa Bandmasters Association, CTA-NEA, SCEA, MENC, NAJE, CBDNA AND SDCCMEA. For eight years he was a volunteer lap reader at Discovery Elementary School in Bakersfield. During World War II, between 1942 1946, he served with the United States Army, in the South Pacific. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, four Battle Stars and a Bronze Arrow Head and served as a high speed radio operator. Mr. Merrill is survived by his wife of 56 years, Lois Merrill; daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Mark McGuire; son, James Merrill and granddaughters, Kathryn and Karlee McGuire. Burial will be at Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery, Point Loma, San Diego, CA. A Veterans ceremony is pending.
