Madden (Gerry Crawfords Mother) A visitation will be held Saturday, July 31, 4-8 p.m., at Hillcrest Mortuary for Mary T. Madden who passed away July 27, 2004. Mary Licata was born in Birmingham, Alabama on September 1, 1918 to Lilly (from Louisiana) and Joseph Licate (from Sicily, Italy) and now to join her grandson, Robert Green on the 27th , with her daughter, Gerry Crawford and granddaughter, Dawn Hamon by her side. She lost her husband, Frank Madden many years ago in Seal Beach, then moved to Las Vegas, Nevada where she lived for 30 years. She was raised in Alabama and Willimantic, Conn., as a child and went to Catholic school. She was the oldest of 9 brothers and sisters, 5 who are still living: Rosie, Lillian, Norman, Josephine, Sammy and Angelo. They were once known as the Licata family, a mafia name from Sicily. Brothers, Paul and Joe preceded Mary in death. She moved to California in 1952. She worked for a couple of electronic places, then landed a job at Douglas Aircraft where she later retired. Mary loved to knit and crochet, play bingo and gamble while living in Las Vegas. She loved to dance all her life to all kinds of music. She enjoyed being a part of the City of Hope and raising money and when visiting in Bakersfield, she enjoyed going to PWP with her daughter. Mary is survived by her daughter, Gerry Crawford; granddaughter, Dawn Hamon and her husband, Quang; 2 great-granddaughters, Monique 10 and Kylee 7, all of Danville, CA. Her grandson, Robert Green, precedes her in death on the 27th (the same day). From Marys Granddaughter: The thing I remember most about my grandmother was playing cards and Yahtzee with her and my brother. I learned alot from her and she made us laugh alot and we even learned poker. From Marys Daughter: She would watch my kids for a month each summer and they had fun there. She cooked for them and took them to the pool everyday. Dawn learned how to swim. The last three years we would spend alot of time together going shopping at the base and would talk about family and past. Myself and Dawn would like to thank the Sunrise Hospital for all the support and effort the last ten days she was there in ICU. I also want to thank the Loyalton of Las Vegas (senior assistant living) for the past 3 months for their support and caring so much for my mother. I know she didnt want to leave her house and give up her independence she had, but I was afraid for her being alone. She met alot of wonder people there and I loved coming to visit her there. The staff was exceptional. I want to thank Bunkers Mortuary for taking her from the hospital and getting ready for transport back to Bakersfield and Hillcrest for driving her back. I also want to thank Bea Cohen and Lee Ortiz for being my mothers best friends for 40 years. I will never forget what joy it gave her every time they called. Thank you both. I know she wasnt the perfect mother at times, we didnt get along for years at a time. But these last six months we had a closeness that I cant explain. I know she loved me, maybe she knew her time was short. She told me about three months ago she wanted to be buried next to her grandson. Well mom, your wish has come true. I hope you are in a better place now and you and Robert are playing cards and joking around, etc. I know your life hasnt always been a good one, I truly wanted your last few months to be with people and do things. I was hoping it would have been longer. In the hospital you didnt like all the tubes and blood taken and you wanted to die. Please forgive me for taking the life support off. I know you didnt want to live that way. I know you knew that we were there and you looked up at us and we told you we loved you and for you to relax and take a nap. She smiled and went off to sleep. We didnt want her in any more pain. We love and miss you so much and its only been three days. Family and many friend will remember you as the crochet lady and who loved to dance. Tell Robert I love him and I hope you are happy now. Additional Comments: Volunteer submission - No relation to deceased.
