Born in York, Nebraska, on May 24, 1920, Eldon spent his childhood and early adult life in Nebraska where he worked at a hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska. In 1942, Eldon enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and was assigned to Minter Field near Shafter, CA. He spent all of World War II at Minter Field as a surgical nurse. After being discharged, he moved to Bakersfield with his wife, Betty, where he had a successful career as a route salesman for Sanitex Dry Cleaners. Eldon, an avid golfer, was a member of the Bakersfield Country Club. He was also an active member of the Barbershop Harmony Society, serving as the Bakersfield Chapter President. He sang in two quartets: The Cotton Pickin Four, with Tom Blankenship, Dr. Tom Maxwell, and Jim Irwin, and the Four-In- Legion with Duane Query, Tom Blankenship, and Ray Arnett. Eldon and Betty enjoyed many Barbershop shows and contests, including the International contest in Los Angeles in 1957. In 1967, Eldon and Betty moved to Oxnard where he eventually opened his own real estate office, Lighthouse Reality. He also sold Toyota automobiles for about ten years when the real estate market slowed down. A few years after Betty passed away, Eldon returned to Bakersfield. He rejoined the Bakersfield Country Club and became a member of Sons in Retirement (SIRS). Eldon met Marilyn Knapp in 1995 and they were married the next year in Las Vegas. They enjoyed traveling and made two trips to England, Ireland, and Scotland, one of which included a trip to Paris. On both trips Eldon was able to play golf at the famous St. Andrews Club, known as the birthplace of golf. Eldon is survived by his wife, Marilyn; her son, Joe Knapp; and her two grandsons, Ted and Andrew, and many friends. A memorial service will be scheduled later.
