Born, weighing just over two pounds, she was fed with milk from an eye-dropper by her parents, John Vernon and Minnie Ethel Hallum. Carolyn grew strong in the one room cabin heated by Kerosene on The Pomeroy-Jewett Ranch just west of the present site of Sycamore Canyon Golf Course. Her schooling began at Vineland School, less than one mile from Sunset or Weedpatch Camp, made famous or infamous by John Steinbecks Grapes of Wrath. Moving to Arvin in 1945, she attended Arvin Union Elementary and Arvin High, graduating in 1956. Arvin and Lamont in those days were almost like scenes from Happy Days. Teenagers congregated at Garretts Drive-In, Jerry Byants Drug Store or the Circle Dot in Arvin and McMels or the Cracker Box in Lamont. Souped and slick hotrods drag-raced on county roads including Towerline. Carolyn often drove her 1951 Plymouth Coupe, the Little Brown Jug to the Lamont Drive-In movie for the one dollar a carload nights. Arvin High School was the center of activities with academic classes, sports, sports rallies, clubs, G.A.A., sock-hops and unforgettable teachers such as Coach Frank Barle, Miss Garcia, Miss Anne Weisel, Ford Luttrell, Mrs. Genevieve MaGruder, Mrs. Cleo Kittell, Mr. Joe Akesson and Mr. Carl Bee. Carolyn married Gene Thome at the Arvin Church of the Nazarene on August 21, 1958 in a double- wedding ceremony. Also wed at the same time was her sister, Virginia Ann and Lawrence Scarbrough. Carolyn and Gene celebrated forty-seven years of marriage along with Virginia and Lawrence this August. Carolyn and Gene were blessed with three children, Marianna, Gene Ronald and Barry Vernon; five grandchildren, Jamie Danielle, Melissa Carolyn, David Francis Eastwood III, Lindsay and Caitlyn Thome. As the family grew, Big Gene was employed by Kundert Farms and the family moved to the Vineland Road Homestead. Here Carolyn was free to be Mother Nature, bringing home and welcoming innumerable stray animals as well as mothering her childrens good friends. In addition to being a full-time homemaker, Carolyn worked for thirty years as an aide, cook and cafeteria supervisor for the Lamont School District. As her co-workers remembered at her retirement in 2001; You made it through floods, windstorms, laughter and tears. You had the ability to outlast 6 District Superintendents, 4 Principals at Alicante and 3 fine Supervisors. You always treated us with respect and fairness and most of all with love. We want you to remember that you will always have a special place in our hearts. Amen to that! Carolyn was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, aunt, sister-in-law and faithful friend. Always putting others first, she was completely unselfish. She was love in action. She took so much pride in the accomplishments of her family, grandchildren, Arvin and Lamont. Her family was her top priority and fulfillment. We love you with all our hearts.
