Vincent J. Hashim Services: Sat., Jan. 21, 10:30 a.m. Vincent J. Hashim was born on January 4, 1924 and passed away on January 18, 2006 at the age of 82 from Alzheimers disease. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Anita; son, Paul Hashim and wife, Sondra; daughter, Annette Davis and son-in-law, Arthur; sister, Ann Lopresti and brother-in-law, Frank; grandchildren, Lesa Hashim, Aaron and Michelle Hashim, Jennifer Davis and Bella Hashim; and his niece, Mary Diane. Vincent Hashim moved to Bakersfield, CA in 1931 and was a graduate of the first four-year class of East Bakersfield High School in 1942. After high school, Vincent served in the Navy aboard a submarine during World War II. When he returned home from the war, he married his high school sweetheart Anita Hashim. Vince was the proprietor of supermarkets in Bakersfield for almost 30 years, including Vincents Supermarket, which was best-known for its friendly atmosphere, quality produce, and Vinces larger-than-life smile. He was ever-present on the supermarket floor and greeted the majority of his customers by their first names. He took an unusual stance in 1972 by replacing the stores liquor department with a bible bookstore. Vincent retired from the retail business in 1976 and with his children established Bakersfield Produce and Distributing Company, a produce brokerage business. Vince was a very sociable person who enjoyed interacting with the community. He served as the first Bakersfield President of Teen Challenge, was a past-President of the Grocers Association and the Kern County Food Dealers Association, and a member of Valley Baptist Church. As a member of Stockdale Country Club, Vincent was an avid golfer and excelled at table tennis. Vince will always be remembered for his outgoing nature, his friendly smile, his loyalty to his friends, and his dedication and generosity to his family. A visitation is scheduled for Friday, January 20, 2006, from 12-9 p.m., at Greenlawn South, 2739 Panama Lane, Bakersfield, CA. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 21, 2006, at 10:30 a.m., also at Greenlawn South. Pastor Phil Neighbors from Valley Baptist will officiate. Reception to immediately follow.
