He was born in Chicago, Illinois on September 12, 1918. His family moved to Shafter when he was a child where his father farmed. He attended local Shafter schools and Bakersfield Junior College as well. After college and during WWII, he joined the Air Force where he learned to fly. He later became a Civil Air Patrol Instructor and transferred to the Ferry Command where he delivered P-38s and B-24s to Europe and Asia. After the war, he returned to Shafter and purchased Oliver Slys Mobile Service Station. He met and married Drennan Smith shortly thereafter. He was very active in Shafter Rotary and later Bakersfield Rotary, as well as being a member of the Wasco Masonic Lodge. Later, he went into insurance sales and finally into real estate where he developed and built homes. Besides his great love for his wife of over forty-five years, he was proud of his flying accomplishments and would take any opportunity to share his stories and his love of flying. He recently joined and was baptized at Valley Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Drennan, in 2001 and his sister, Irene Stockton this year. He is survived by his brother, Harry Hofman of Morro Bay and many nieces and nephews on both sides of the families. We would like to thank Benny Ruiz for his care during his final days. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Rotary. Visitation will be held on September 22nd from 1-5 p.m. and services at 12:30 p.m., on September 23rd, at Doughty-Calhoun-OMeara. A short cryptside service will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park. Doughty-Calhoun-OMeara Funeral Directors Legacy.com Published in the Bakersfield Californian on 9/21/2005.
