He was 75. Born Frederick Henry Holt on October 25, 1930 in Bakersfield, CA, he graduated from Bakersfield High School in 1949. He enjoyed his years at his high school and took pride that his mother, Hester Holt, taught there. Mr. Holt always looked forward to his class reunions and kept in close contact with many of his classmates throughout his life. His father, Frederick Hoar, practiced law in Bakersfield when he was growing up. After graduating from high school he pursued an acting career. Mr. Holt made his acting debut opposite Elizabeth Montgomery and Sarah Marshall in the early 1950s in the production "Meet Me in St. Louis." He also appeared in more than 23 other theater productions, including the National Touring Company of Bernard Shaw's "The Devil's Disciple." In 1960 he came back to the San Joaquin Valley to attend Fresno State and majored in marketing. While in college he worked for Hodge and Sons and formed a lifetime relationship with the store and its owners. Always neatly dressed and critical of fashion, he had tremendous knowledge about fabric and how clothes should be tailored. He believed that the standard for a man's suit should be "unostentatious good taste" shown through the quality of its fabric, its simple style and its tailoring. Before he graduated from college Mr. Holt was hired in 1963 as marketing director for Duncan Ceramics. In 1967 he moved to Monterey, Calif. and was president of Market Trends, a marketing and advertisement firm, and owned retail stores in Monterey and Carmel. In 1972 he moved back to Fresno and started up and managed a variety of impressive and interesting retail stores until his retirement in 1993. Known for his talent and brilliance for creating beautiful stores, Mr. Holt believed there was no reason why customers in Fresno should not have the same options in their shopping experiences as those in San Francisco, New York and Chicago. After retirement he was very active in supporting theatre and writing groups in Fresno. He started Best Productions that established a "Living History" series where actors would go into local schools to dramatize stories of the Early American experience. Mr. Holt also wrote and performed a one man play "Max Perkins," the book editor who discovered and edited Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald, at the Fresno Art Museum's Bonner Auditorium in 1997. A donation to support Clovis Regional Library, 1155 Fifth St, Clovis, CA 93612 can be made in memory of Fred H. Holt. Mr. Holt Sr. leaves his wife, Wilma; three children, Richard, Frederick Jr., and Amy; and three grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 7th, in Corcoran Cemetery. Legacy.com Published in the Bakersfield Californian on 12/6/2005.
