Pastor Wayne Montgomery will officiate. Mona Doris Homer was born in Sweetwater, Texas to Nina Reed Homer, Estera, Texas and John Turner Homer, Dallas, Mississippi. She was the second of six children born to a farmer and part-time Nazarene preacher. Being in the midst of the depression, she was working as a domestic at the age of 14, cooking and cleaning house for the local doctors family. She was led to believe in the Lord by her own dad and together with her brother, Harmon; they formed the Homer Quartet and sang in many churches around Harmon County. Because of her beautiful alto singing voice she became quite known and had the thrill of being invited to perform with the famous Stamps Quartet. When they took up residence in Hollis, Oklahoma she met and married Paul Groves. They left the dust bowl in 1936, pursuing their dreams in California and settling in Wasco where they both remained to the present day. Together, they raised a son, Jackie Dale with Paul working as a printer and Mona at the G&L Market and later Safeway. Mona was able to briefly resume her singing career when she performed with the Wasco Lions Club in Talk of the Town, a community vaudeville and variety show. She made many life-long friends in Lady Lions and contributed to many charitable endeavors. She was a gifted pianist and wrote several songs for piano without ever having a single lesson. She said, It just comes naturally. After working at the Wasco Hardware Company for many years, she met and married the dashing barber from Shafter, Earl Boots Perry and enjoyed his brothers and sisters very much with lengthy phone conversations. Effie and Vernon Scott became constant companions when son, Jack married their daughter, Selita. Mona could be seen caring for her beautiful flowers and gardens on the corner of Sunset and Birch in Wasco until well past her 90th birthday. Mona is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Jack and Selita Groves of Shafter; stepson, Mickey and Patty Perry of Ventura; grandchildren, Jeff and Alison Groves of Shafter, Kevin Groves and Greg Humpa of San Francisco, Jennifer and Ryan Riddle and great-grand- daughter, Alexis Weishaar of Bakersfield; and stepgrandchildren, Candy, Chris, Tracy, and Mark of Ventura; brother, Vernon Homer of Los Angeles and children, Nina, Kerry, and Andy; brother-in-law, John Sawyer and special niece, Rita Richardson of Eagle, Idaho; sister-in-law, Gwen and Bill Baker of Ojai, California, and life-long friend and helper, Paul Groves of Wasco. Mona was preceded in death by her husband, Boots Perry; brothers, Harmon and Don Homer and sisters, Janie Schell and Betty Sawyer. Thanks to Dr. Bob Hagen for his compassionate care, Rosemary Hernandez personal caregiver, and to the great staff at Shafter Health Care.
